Music: Records - General (9 items)

We last updated our site on 21-May-2017. The next update is scheduled for 10-Jun-2017.

This listing includes phonograph records of a general nature. Records may also be found in other categories relating to the subject of the record as well as specific records listings for 78s, 45s and 33-1/3s.

Records have changed is size and shape through the years. Generally speaking the following dates can be used as a measurement. The cylinder-shaped phonograph record for use with the early Edison models was made about 1889. Disc records were first made by 1894 however were primarily one-sided. The double-sided discs reached the market in 1904. High-fidelity records were first issued in 1944, the first vinyl disc in 1946, the first stereo record in 1958. The 78 RPM became the standard in 1926 but was discontinued in 1957. In 1932, the first 33 1/3 RPM was made but was not sold commercially until 1948. In 1949, the 45 RPM was introduced. Compact discs became available in the U.S. in 1982 and many companies began phasing out the production of phonograph records.
