|
The Keynoter: Spring 1972 The Presidential Candidates of 1884 - Cleveland vs. Blaine. The major feature of this issue relates the story of the 1884 campaign, accompanied by dozens of photos of campaign items. Upon the assassination of President Garfield in 1881, Chester Arthur became President and astonished most of the politicians by advocating reforms and generally doing a fine job. He greatly disappointed his cronies and when the Republicans went to convention in 1884, the nod went to Blaine. The campaign was one of the dirtiest and the results extremely close. Other features include one on satire in politics and on Bryan's speech "No crown of Thorns - No Cross of Gold." Notice: This issue of the Keynoter is depleted. What is being offered is a photocopy of the issue.

The Greenback Party began in pre-Civil War times and last fielded candidates in 1960, supporting such candidates as Butler, Cooper and Weaver. The People's Party had their strength with the silver issue of the 1890s and soon declined, holding their last convention in 1912. (There is no connection, direct or indirect, between this party and the People's Party that started up again in 1968.) This feature includes many interesting photos relating to the campaign items of these two parties. The Keynoter: Autumn & Winter 1974 Presidential Candidates of 1856. The story and photos of items in this issue's feature tell an interesting story of an interesting election. The Democratic candidate, James Buchanan, won the election over the new Repubican Party, the American Party and the North American Party. The Whigs supported the nominations of the American Party, Fillmore & Donelson. The nominee for president on the new Republican Party, General John Fremont, was only 43 years old. Second place on the ticket was in hot debate, ending up with William Dayton of New Jersey winning out at the convention by 159 votes to 110 for a gentleman from Illinois by the name of Abraham Lincoln. An excellent report on the 1974 APIC National Convention in San Diego, the first national to be held in the west, saw 550 people in attendance, mass media coverage (even Huntley & Brinkley) and 1972 presidential candidate John Schmitz as banquet speaker.
